A New Gut Friendly Product!

A while back, I went to a job interview where the interviewer looked at my resume and immediately said, “Oh, you are poop girl!” That was a proud moment for me.

It’s no surprise when I say that I am fascinated by the intricacies of the digestive system. I once had a blog for years (prior to this one) where I wrote about digestion, the microbiome and my favorite topic: poop.

Recently, a company named ISOThrive reached out to me asking if I’d try a new microbiome-related product. I was skeptical at first, but after speaking with their team and doing some research on my own, I was very intrigued by ISOThrive: a microFood called MIMO (maltosyl-iso-malto-oligosaccharides), and the impact that it could have on the gut.

But before we dive into the way this microFood impacts the body, we first need to understand the basic functions of the gut and the gut microbiota. Gut microbiota refers to the community of bacteria and microorganisms living symbiotically inside human digestive systems. These bacteria produce substances that the body requires in order to function, and the gut is often referred to as our second brain. This alone highlights the importance of maintaining the delicate balance between good bacteria and bad or pathogenic bacteria, yeast and viruses.

When gut microbiota healthy and well fed, the food that you eat can more easily pass through the digestive system as it’s broken down into smaller particles, allowing for enhanced nutrient absorption and even improved mood. If you eat a normal healthy diet, you’re likely getting enough of the kind of microFood that comes from plants and whole grains. But an important subset of good bacteria require fermented microFood in order to function. And if you’re like most people, you’re probably not eating several cups of fermented foods every day. As a result, you’ve got a subset of starving bacteria that can start consuming the mucus lining of the colon to survive. This can lead to leaky gut, systemic inflammation and a host of chronic health conditions.

What I like about ISOThrive is that it’s an easy to consume nectar that has no flavor when mixed with water, and has a subtly sweet flavor when eaten directly out of the packet.

My biggest concern before taking ISOThrive was that it would upset my stomach or cause increased gas and bloating, but it actually had the opposite effect.

So what exactly is this product doing, and how is this microFood impacting the body?

  • Not all microFood is the same – you need to feed all types of bacteria so they can make the nutrients the body need to thrive. When the good bacteria get the microFood they need, they can overtake the bad bacteria.
  • Fermented – If orange is the new black, then fermented foods are the new superfoods. The public is starting to embrace the benefits of fermented foods, which is apparent in the products popping up on supermarket shelves and the unique compounds that they contain. ISOThrive provides an easy to eat, convenient dose of these powerful compounds without having to consume cups of sauerkraut every day.
  • SIBO – ISOThrive actually seems to help alleviate symptoms of SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) – My initial concern was that adding prebiotic fuel to a digestive system that had a bacterial overgrowth would result in gas, bloating and intestinal discomfort, but according to ISOThrive, patients with SIBO who take ISOThrive may experience an improvement in symptoms. I need to further test this product to see what I observe from a clinical perspective, but it sounds promising so far.

While we are just starting to break open the complexities of the gut microbiota through research, this product has really caught my attention. One thing I notice with a lot of my patients (and myself) is their lack of bacterial diversity. Most people need to take a daily probiotic and need to fuel and feed all these bacterial strains, so it’s important to include microFood that we’re not normally getting from the foods we eat. If I can help people enhance the good bacteria or probiotics in their gut, I know that they will feel better, have more energy and absorb more nutrients from the food that they are eating. That is what I call a win!
