WHAT IS TRANSPOOTION? IT MAY BE EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK!

As a dietetic intern doing my clinical rotation I remember being warned about C-diff or Clostridium difficile, an antibiotic resistant bacteria that caused harmful diarrhea. Once a patient acquired C-diff, they would get such bad diarrhea, that their condition would often get worse. They would become dehydrated, their immune system would weaken and it would take them longer to heal. That is when I first read about TransPOOtion (not a scientific term), or what we call a stool transplant. I think this was the moment I fell in love with the digestive tract and nutrition.

TransPOOtion (I just want to see how many times I can say this), or a stool transplant is pretty much what you would think it is. It is the process of taking a healthy persons poo and transplanting it into an unhealthy persons body, thus repopulating gut flora and improving the sick persons health. I mean, does it get better than that? With more research being conducted in the realm of gut health, scientists are finding the true power the little bugs in our bodies have on our overall health. Gut bacteria not only house our primary immune system response, but also interact with mood hormones and can play a large role in auto-immune response like allergies. There were even studies done with mice, who engage in coprophagia, the act of eating poo (another great word! Don’t you love this?!?), to show how the ingestion of the poo of healthy mice actually improved the health of the sick mice. Now before you go around eating your healthy friends poo, lets talk about safe ways to increase the health of your gut flora and improve digestion and overall health.

Tips for Improved Gut Health (which is the key to everything)

  • Support healthy gut flora by including high probiotic foods in your diet. Increase foods like kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, miso, pickles, probiotic shots (Farmhouse has a great product, pictured above) and kombucha.

  • Adding vinegar to the diet can increase a molecule called acetate, something healthy gut bacteria produce to calm the immune system and promote good health.

  • Ensure digestion is working in tip-top shape, this may require adding a digestive enzyme before meals to help break foods down

  • Increasing fiber intake – include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet.

  • Get yourself a squatty potty. No this does not improve your gut health per say, but it does make going to the bathroom much easier and allows you to strain less, my fav!
